Where Was the Night King at the End of Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 2?

This theory is horrifying.

After eight seasons of buildup, the fight for the living of Westeros is about to take place at Winterfell.

Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 2, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” ends with a long line of White Walkers prepared to lead their massive army into Winterfell. But someone is noticeably absent: the Night King.

The Night King has been present at every other major battle involving the Army of the Dead, including Hardhome in Season 5 and the capture-a-wight mission beyond the Wall in Season 7. It's possible he's merely flying above his army on Viserion (or left out of the episode for budget reasons), but one theory circulating on Reddit is far more sinister.

Redditor u/qp0n says the Night King isn’t stupid: He knows Daenerys has two fire-breathing dragons who can easily defeat his army. So he’s not going to ride his biggest asset, Viserion, into a battle he could lose:

It would be easy for Drogon/Rhaegal to take out the zombie dragon; it's 2v1 and wight's [sic] all can be killed by fire.. including Viserion. It would not be difficult to simply fly up to Viserion and breathe fire on him, and that would be that. THE NIGHT KING IS NOT STUPID, not enough to kamikaze his most powerful asset. - If you have a superweapon that you can't use against a particular target, then you find a different target […] I predict they actually win the battle... only to find out soon after that there is a new army of the dead much bigger and much further south... the population of King's Landing.

The theory states that the living will, in fact, win the Battle of Winterfell, only to realize the Night King has one upped them once again by flying south to turn the people of King's Landing into wights.

Throughout the series, characters often remind each other that one million people live in King’s Landing (plus 20,000 men of the Golden Company, sans elephants). Could the battle of Winterfell be a clever diversion planned by the Night King, so Jon Snow and friends are occupied with the battle while he flies south on his dragon to collect even more dead for his army? It’s possible, and might've been foreshadowed already, according to u/qp0n.

In Season 4, Bran touches a weirwood tree and sees a destroyed throne room as well as a shadow of a dragon flying over King’s Landing. Most assumed it was one of Dany’s dragons—but it could be the Night King riding Viserion over the capital.

And back in Season 2, Daenerys sees multiple visions in the House of the Undying. In one, she's in a destroyed throne room at the Red Keep, covered in what appears to be ash or snow. This could imply that winter will come to King’s Landing, along with the Night King.

No matter what, the living can't win the war with the dead unless the Night King is killed for good. If he's indeed headed south, the war could stretch out until the end of the series—increasing the living's body count along the way.
